Cuts and Roots: A Fashion project for men, in collaboration with Roots Barbershop, Sirlute and London College of Fashion

Styles, trims, patterns, grades, cutting and identity, are all terms used across both barbering and fashion. We want to bring the two together, in a programme that will give you the skills to design and make a jacket unique to you, whilst celebrating the spaces that bring us together.

Taking inspiration from the unique setting of the Barbershop as a space for intergenerational debate, familiarity and friendship, we invite you to take part in a project exploring male identity, image, belonging and shared experience through making.

You do not need any experience of fashion design or making. We have 10 spaces available on this course and are looking for men aged 19+ who know Barbershops and appreciate what they can mean to the community. The programme is FREE and all materials will be provided.

What will I be doing?

You will be working in the training space of our Making for Change manufacturing unit, with access to industrial equipment and our amazing London College of Fashion workshop leaders. Working individually you will design a flag that represents aspects of your identity. You will make a jacket that this flag will be appliqued to. Collectively, you will design a flag that represents what the Barbershop means to you as a community.

Within the programme you will;

  • Explore themes of self-expression and representation
  • Be taught the design and sewing skills required to make a garment
  • Learn about fabrics, fitting, pattern cutting and construction methods
  • Meet inspiring local designers and makers working in the fashion industry
  • Have access to mentor support with Sirlute
  • Have your work showcased in the Olympic Park in September 2023

There is no need to have any previous sewing skills to take part. All materials and equipment will be provided.

Cuts and Roots is the final iteration of London College of Fashion’s 1000 Coats initiative. 1000 Coats is a project that delivers skills development workshops to community sewing groups, reflecting on how fashion and making can build communities and inspire social change.

1000 Coats aims to bring people together from our community, to communicate, share and make together, enabling a sense of wellbeing, connection and empowerment. An original idea of artist Whitney McVeigh, 1000 Coats is a collaboration between east London communities and Making for Change at LCF in the run-up to the College’s move to the Olympic Park in 2023.
